The heart shape seems to dominate this month with all the beautiful Valentines decorations and crafting supplies. We thought it would be fun to make candles using heart shaped containers. They come in various colors and sizes, so choose what appeals to your taste and decor. They also make great gifts!

Supplies Needed:

* Heart shaped container candles (heat resistant)
* Container wax (we chose soy)
* Wicking (based on the type of wax and the container size)
* Candle dye (optional)
* Fragrance oil (optional)
* Double boiler or wax melter
* Glue gun

Step One: Prepare the Containers

Make sure the container is clean and free from chips and cracks. With the glue gun, place a small amount of glue on the bottom of the wick tab and secure it to the bottom of the container.

Step Two: Melt the Wax

Melt the wax in the top part of a double boiler or in a wax melting pot. Once melted remove from the heat and stir in the dye, if color is desired. Blend for about two minutes. Add the fragrance oil, if desired, and stir for another two minutes.

Step Three: Pour The Wax

Once the wax reaches pouring temperature, carefully pour the wax into the containers. Leave about a 1/4 inch space at the top.

Step Four: Finish The Candles

Most container soy waxes are one pour, but if the wax starts to settle as it cools, punch small holes around the wick and do a second pour to top off the candle. After candles harden (1/2 hour to 2 hours) inspect the candles to ensure the tops are smooth. You now have beautiful heart shaped candles to give as gifts or decorate for the holiday.

Enjoy your new heart shaped container candles!!

Candle Tip of the Week

Floating Candles

Floating candles can provide both a formal and informal setting for either a dinner party or a back yard picnic. Floating candles in a clear bowl creates an extra special lighting effect. Using distilled water eliminates mineral buildup on the side of crystal or glass, preserving its unique presentation of floating candles.
