Using the simple technique of applying rubber stamped images to candles, it is possible to turn a plain white candle into a beautiful decoration. As the candle burns, the flame shines through the brightly colored image, giving it an almost ‘stained glass’ effect. A round candle will show off the stamped images well, but other shapes can be used. This project has endless possibilities just by varying the images, colors and candle shapes and sizes.

Supplies Needed:

• Choice of rubber stamp
• Ink pad
• Tissue paper
• Scissors
• Marker pens
• Heat Gun
• Candles

Step 1. Pick A Rubber Stamp

The stamps that work particularly well with this project are stamps that have an outline that gives a large clear area as this will be colored in and helps give the bold finished effect. Flowers work particularly well as they can be colored in dramatic shades, however hearts, animals, stars or other shapes would work equally well.

Step 2. Measure

Measure the circumference (the measurement around the girth of the candle) of the candle and measure the width of the stamped image. Work out how many images will fit on the stamp. The gap between the stamped images will depend on the size of the candle and stamp used.

Step 3. Stamp and Color Image

Stamp the required number of images onto white tissue paper (stamp a couple of extra images in case any get damaged). When the stamped images are dry, color them in with a marker pen. Use a bold color for maximum effect.

Step 4. Cut Out Shape

Cut around the stamped image, cutting close to the outline. If you are using the same color tissue paper and candle do not worry about cutting into intricate designs as the background paper gets hidden within the candle.

Step 5. Apply Image To Candle

Gently mark on the candle where the images are to go. Place the stamped image in the required position on the candle. A couple of dabs of glue will make keeping the image in place easier while the candle is being heated. Another way to help keep the stamped image in place is to heat the surface of the candle and then quickly press the image into place while the surface is tacky.

Step 6. Apply Heat

With a heat gun, gently heat the surface of the candle. When the surface of the candle starts to glisten take the heat away. The stamped image will sink into the melted wax. Let cool and you should have a beautifully stamped candle.

Enjoy your new stamped candle!

Candle Tip of the Week

Floating Candles

Floating candles can provide both a formal and informal setting for either a dinner party or a back yard picnic. Floating candles in a clear bowl creates an extra special lighting effect. Using distilled water eliminates mineral buildup on the side of crystal or glass, preserving its unique presentation of floating candles.
